Planned Parenthoodhas filed a lawsuit in San Francisco, naming David Daleiden,Troy Newman,Albin Rhomberg,Sandra Merritt,Gerardo Lopez,Phillip Cronin, the Center for Medical Progress (CMP),and BioMax as defendants. The women's health care organization accuses the Center for Medical Progress and its leaders, the above named,of "illegal conduct that includes violating the Racketeer Influence and Corrupt Organization Act (RICO Act) and engaging in wire fraud, mail fraud, invasion of privacy, illegal secret recording, and trespassing."
Founded in 2013 by Daleiden, the CMP is an antiabortion organization that,in 2015,released a set ofdebunked, fraudulentvideos featuringfetal images from the web spliced with footage secretly recordedwhile he and cohorts posed as "buyers of fetal tissue" in meetings with Planned Parenthood executives. The women's healthcare organization has been exonerated in all 11 states that conducted investigations into CMP's allegations that Planned Parenthood profited from donating tissue.
"The people behind this fraud lied and broke the law in order to spread malicious lies about Planned Parenthood," said Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America,in a statement released by the organization today."This lawsuit exposes the elaborate, illegal conspiracy designed to block women's access to safe and legal abortion, and we filed the case to hold them accountable."
Beyond smearing Planned Parenthood's public image, the release of the videos catalyzed a "nine-fold increase in threats and criminal activities against their health centers." In early December,a Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood centerwas attacked: killing a police officer and two civilians and injuring five police officers and four civilians.
"CMP's reckless and dangerous actions have created a poisonous environment that fuels political attacks on access to reproductive health care and feeds threats against our health centers," said Kathy Kneer,CEO of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California."We're going on the offensive to expose this fraud for what it is and hold the people behind it accountable—in order to prevent further harassment of our patients and staff and protect access to the preventive and reproductive health care Planned Parenthood provides to millions of people each year."
