Are you going out to eat tonight? As you know, restaurants can be total nutrition traps, with some foods packing more calories, fat, and sugar than you should get in an entire day.Ready to meet three of country's three biggest offenders (and Idomean "biggest")?
It's easy to get enticed by some of the decadent things on restaurant menus (my traps tend to be pastas topped with creamy sauces and I always gravitate toward cheesy things, like spinach-artichoke dip)--and once in a while, that's okay.Plus, there are usually some healthier options available. But it's always fascinating (and a good reminder) to see just how many calories some of the menu options have--especially the ones that top the "worst of the worst" lists. Here are three of them:
Worst Sandwich:The Cheesecake Factory's Grilled Shrimp and Bacon Club. When shrimp meets a pile of bacon and "special dressing," the result is a heavy hitter, weighing in at 1930 calories, 24 g saturated fat, and 2965 mg sodium.__
Worst Breakfast Food:IHOP Big Country Breakfast with Chicken Fried Steak & Country Gravy.2440 calories, 145 g fat, 210 g carbohydrates
5520 mg sodium. Not like anyone would expect a fried steak with gravy, eggs, and pancakes to be diet food, of course.
Worst Dessert:Romano's Macaroni Grill's Smothered Chocolate Cake, with 1580 calories, 48 g saturated fat, 147 g carbohydrates.Even splitting the dessert doesn't do much--that's a staggering amount of calories for a piece of chocolate cake.
What are your favorite better-for-you choices when you out to eat at a chain restaurant?Do you have any tricks for reducing some of the fat or calories (order dressing on the side, etc.)?
